Morriston Hospital's Radio Station on Channels 3, 4 & 14
Charity Number: 231687

Hospital Radio at Morriston Hospital, Morriston, Swansea, UK. Began in 1968, when it was set-up by a few ambitious, hard working individuals. In those early days and until quite recently the station was known as RADIO LF. The ‘LF’ standing for League of Friends.

Funding for the project was partly provided by the volunteers, as a result of various fund raising events and also by the generosity of the Morriston Hospital League Of Friends.

In those days, the radio studio was situated in a room which affectionately became known as the ‘Bunker’. It was a small room with no windows and an extremely low ceiling. If you were tall you were in danger of becoming a patient very quickly.

In 1979 the studio moved its location from inside the Hospital buildings to a Portacabin in the grounds of the hospital.

In 1990, it was decided that the radio station needed a new name and a fresh image. After wading through pages of names, the name Radio Freeway was finally chosen.

In the Summer of 1996 work began on building a new studio area, once again, inside the hospital. The membership worked hard to buy new equipment and with help also give by the league of friends and the kindness and generosity of the Trust at Morriston Hospital, a new 3 Studio complex was created.

Radio Freeway is manned by volunteers who broadcast to the wards throughout the week and at weekends. Over the years, our potential audience figures have increased as the hospital continues to expand. In the very near future we will gain even more listeners, as a result of the new Cardiac Centre coming on line.

Programmes range from the popular Record Request Show through to more specialist programmes, such as local sport and radio drama. Outside broadcasts also feature in programme schedules, with items such as ‘live’ Quiz shows.

Throughout the year, we will be running regular recruitment drives, for more volunteer ward visitors, request collectors and of course radio presenters.
